Yeah, definitely don't use WinZip, but 7-Zip is free and good software. I noticed you allowed RAR which also isn't supported on Windows unless you install new software. WinRAR also opens .7z files. I don't know any software that opens .rar but not .7z

Anything changed on thoughts of 7z support yet? 7-Zip is free and open source, and often has better compression than rar, so outside of some janky technical reasons, it seems like a bit of a strange choice to allow WinRAR but not 7-Zip...

It's especially good when bundling different older versions of the same character, while WinRAR compresses each sprite/sound/etc file separately, 7-Zip seems to see the duplicate data and merge it, often reducing the size as though there was only one copy in there. I download a lot of stuff so I've had a lot of test cases, and most of the time 7z gives the better compression ratio (and zip is pretty badly compressed lol)

Even so, it's really not worth looking into. The unmodified version only allowed you to play with two characters under a time limit. I don't understand why anyone would want it anyway.

In that regard, people archive demo discs and such just the same, it's just for history's sake, really. Maybe not quite as interesting as user content, but still a curiosity, and it'd be interesting to see how it differs from the earlier available hacks.

(And didn't really think I was going off-topic much, if a version of MUGEN itself can be missing too...)

  3. Since lost media and preservation are things that I care quite a lot about and would like others to care about too, might as well contribute to this thread (even if it's been a while since the last post, hope that's okay).

The original unmodified WinMUGEN, the one straight from Elecbyte with all the limitations in place, is lost media. Honestly, I'm surprised that's even possible, but it is how it is.

Some people may still have it, so it might be a good idea to spread the word and bring attention to this pretty big missing piece of MUGEN history...
