As a feature, once you choose a model, you can stay with that model as long as you want, or until you get thrown by an opponent. Even if you go to the next round, or win the match as any Model, you will proceed to the next round, or to the next match AS your current Model.

Spelunker

You would think a spelunker would fight with tools, right? Wrong. This version of the weakest NES character is a shotoklone with 29 lives. Every special, grab, and/or hyper costs him a life or more than one life. He also loses lives by being hit by the opponent, as to be expected. Not absolutely source accurate, but accurate in the sense that Spelunker perishes from even the slightest things (ghosts, bats, falling from not that high heights) in his source game.
He also has gone on to star in a few ports and remasters of his game, as well as some spinoffs (Spelunker World and its enhanced port, Spelunker Party!), and even an anime OVA (Spelunker is a Teacher).

Some mini-boss from Super C from the NES. You can stand on its head, but in order to damage it you have to shoot its bottom. This is easier said than done, however, due to how its attacks involves shooting bullets in almost every direction, and of course it has hyperarmor. Let's not forget the Metagross attack on the higher palettes, beyond 1p-4p.
