slow loading on character HD and failed to load .ssf ?

HD characters are different from small characters
1 usually character files reach more than 20.00 MB I've even seen characters that have sprite effects up to 200 .00 MB usually it happens because so many unused sprite effects animation
will make mugen very slow and the number of character collections you have
2 wrong in choosing mugen engine 10 or 11

The reason of failing to load sff is simple you are using exclusive 1.1 characters on 1.0 simple as that and not that much of an issue since those use the advantages of 1.1 and are made for opengl.

The other thing  you mention is an issue on your end,while characters get bigger due to sprites being HD it doesn't mean they don't use all the sprites or effectssince most just use all the animations and sprites available,and those made for 1.1 are more compressed then using 1.0 characters (more colors,higher compression) yet you end up using more space due to quality being higher.

Take as an example the blazblue characters is quite normal they would be bigger in size since those are from n HD game,second is from a ps 3 game so kinda understandable the size.

As was advice before is better to make several games then one big compilation that will crash middleway through,mugen is a 32 bit game engine hence you have those limitations yet no ones take them into account,while is true that mugen means infinite that doesn't mean is OK to put 1000 characters and call it a game since it isn't,the infinite meaning of mugen is in other area and is that you can do whatever you want with the engine,some have made a shmup,others made an SLG,other made an rpg and so on yet difference with them is that they made a proper balance game with a small roster of characters customizing every aspect and setting of the engine to fit their purpose.

My personal advice "if you are gonna make a game on mugen quality over quantity and don't be like the others putting a roster of 2000 characters calling it a day"
