First appearing in 1986, Brimstone was an artificially-created being generated from a "techno-seed" that Darkseid unleashed on Earth during Operation: Humiliation. Now, Brimstone is not at all like this, instead being the secret identity of a man named Joseph Chamberlain in the New 52 continuity. This character is based on the former Brimstone.
